Wicklow Street Open Space
My chosen location is an open area on Wicklow Street in the Badlands area near King’s Cross Station – Wicklow Street Open Space.
It is very close to my flat and I used to walk past it on my way to the Chinese restaurant. The area around this street used to be known as ‘The Badlands of King’s Cross Station’. Looking at the map, this open space is next to the railway tracks and opposite a protected heritage building, ‘Derby Lodge’. There are some hotels and car parks next to it.
I have taken some photos and collated information about this space.

1. Since I moved to London, I have travelled through this area a total of 4 times.
First time: there were about 4-5 children with 2 adult women in the playground area
Second time: about 5 children in the basketball court area
Third time: no one
Fourth time: no one

2. I have also made observations of the area surrounding this space. From the outside walls, fences, houses on the opposite side of the street, street graffiti to the furthest away areas on the same street. I have collated and classified their images and analysed the reasons behind them or the problems that can be seen.
I would like to use these words to summarise my impression of it: tranquil, abandoned, nostalgia, community, sense of boundaries.
- I collected photos of everything from rubbish on the ground, traces on the walls and details of some of the facilities in the playground area.
I’m trying to find some interesting graphics, colours and a sense of storytelling in the traces. So I printed it off am doing some annotations and sketches to try.
