Y1U2-‘Positions through Iterating’ 2/2

week 2

During the first week, I created multiple iterations of faces based on the elements of the eyes, nose and mouth. The goal was to investigate the diversity of designer ‘identities’ and how the design ethos distorts, abstracts, idealises or rejects the human figure in this part of the project.

When the facial structure was reduced and become ugly and random, the sense of identity did not immediately disappear, but instead continued to stay in a more abstract and symbolic form.

Process:

  1. Color saturation was progressively muted to grayscale
  2. Facial structures simplified into pure geometry
  3. Lines became thinner, details disappeared
  4. Eventually only the two frames of the glasses remain, and even the pattern
  5. disappears/paper disappears – evoking the memory of a face rather than its form

feedback:

  1. It is not about changing elements, but about reducing them. It is better to faithfully translate the idea of the text.
  2. Some of the design actions are too ‘stylised’ rather than responding to the manifesto.
